Celebrating Baptism at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church
Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the church and made sharers in her mission. Catechism of Catholic Church #1213
Parents expressing a desire to have their child baptized are accepting the responsibility of raising their child in the Catholic faith.
Baptism Preparation for Children 0 to 6 years of age
“The church has always understood these words to mean that children should not be deprived of baptism, because they are baptized in the faith of the Church, a faith proclaimed for them by their parents and godparents, who represent both the local Church and the whole society of saints and believers.” #2, Rite of Baptism For Children
Ideally, children should be baptized within the first 6 years of life (preferably within the first 3 months of birth.)
Parents must choose godparents who are Catholic and are living their faith. If it is a married couple, the couple must be married sacramentally through the church. A single (non-married) male, and a non-blood relative single (non-married) female may together be the godparents of the child. Also, a brother and sister may together be the godparents of the child. If in doubt, please speak to the person doing the baptismal preparation.
